We are not going to be contemporary in our thinking on employee engagement here by any means. Instead I am going to point out a few amazing examples of how business has, and can benefit from thinking outside the usual employee engagement strategies. A classic example of what can be achieved from these sometimes radical approaches is “SEMCO”, a Brazilian company that experienced 40 % annual growth from 1982 to 2003 and revenue increases of $4 million to $202 million in that same period.
The current explosion of social media has highlighted a workplace coalface shift for the predominantly baby boomer male executive management profile. They grew up in an age of carefully prepared and scripted PR departments, press releases and a very rigid company public message. Moving away from that model to one of more employee engagement and freedom of expression via social media platforms for example is sometimes a hard step to take.
Lets face it, a passionate employee well connected to the social networks has an enormous potential to any employer these days. They are going to talk about their passion no matter what you say so you might as well get them on side and empower them. Not only will they appreciate it, but you could also measure your results through an employee engagement survey.
Obviously there has to be some structure but also freeing your staff to express their ideas, be more involved in company day to day operations can reap huge returns for those brave enough to take that step. Breaking down the anxiety barriers, the heavy handed punishment regime and the inhibitive hierarchies can all lead to a much more empowered workforce.
I recently read a very good book called the “Spirit of Learning” which gives a very insightful account of how you can identify and relate to your audience so that you are not inadvertently setting up a social structure for disempowerment. It is not a big stretch to extrapolate some of the ideas in that book to illuminate what can be done to help you improve your employee engagement.
