Weathering and Erosion

Australia faces many climate problems, the most notable is lack of water. Water is essential since Australia's economly is largely dependant on farming which needs a lot of fresh water. Global warming and climate change and atmospheric conditions are causing Australia to literally dry up - the country is slowly turning in to a desert. A lack of water means there may not be enough water to grow crops, but secondly it may not be possible to keep soil moist during times where the land is fallow. Subsequently there is a lot of soil weathering and erosion. Soil weathering and erosion has driven farmers to turn a great deal of attention to not only preserviing water but also to prevent soil weathering and soil erosion on their farmland. Many people are familiar with large dust storms which are caused by this eroded soil particles (dust) being blown and carried as atmospheric dust.

Weathering Erosion

Soil weathering is the process of freeze thaw (not so commonplace in Australia), rain, water, river, sea, and wind damaging and breaking apart rocks and larger clumps of soil. When this is broken down into smaller particles and washed or blown away then we are talking about erosion; soil erosion is where soil is moved from its initial position. Usually this happens by graity, rain, rivers and by wind. Weathering erosion and dust are all inter-related problems caused by less than ideal climate conditions.

Erosion Control

Popular method for erosion control in Australia are by natural methods such as crop rotation, and mulching unused land. Secondly the appliction of soil stabilizers help greatly with erosion control. To prevent wind erosion many farmers construct wind break or grow hedges to help break the wind flow over the land.

Weathering and erosion are major factors to consider when working on any large scale construction-type projects.

Weathering refers to the breaking down/decomposition of the rocks on the earth's surface into smaller pieces/sediments. Erosion refers to the combination of weathering and movement of these sediments by wind and water.
